What? Shortcircuit is open source? Well yes, but there are big big caveats. Right now there are no downloadable assets you can get to play music, and there is no runnable open source Shortcircuit plugin. We estimate this will be the case for much of 2021, and maybe indefinitely. You may never be able to run an open source Shortcircuit. Might just be too much work. But if you are dev you can help!

What was Shortcurcuit?
Shortcircuit was created as a reaction against the ongoing trend where software samplers are being designed with the primary intent of library playback.

It is intended for people who, like us, consider a sampler to be a musical instrument in its own right, and not just a way to emulate other instruments. It has been a very high priority to make sure that adding and editing individual samples is as fast and logical as possible.

The sample hierarchy in shortcircuit allow you to place samples directly at the highest level of the multi, without having to deal with instrument hierarchies and patches. Want to add a sample to your song? Just drag & drop the sample into shortcircuit and you’re ready to go. Samples can be put in groups for multi-sampling and kit-building, but the complexity is only there when you need it

Sound quality is of highest concern, and shortcircuit uses very high-quality interpolation to ensure that your samples sound as good as the source material, regardless of the pitch you play them at. All filters & effects are calculated at the precision required for them to sound the way intended and oversampling are used when required to prevent aliasing.

Shortcircuit was designed to sound great, all other concerns have been secondary. But don’t take our word for it, download ‘shortcircuit free’ and find out for yourself.

Each voice in shortcircuit features two filter-slots, and the selection isn’t limited to the traditional pick. In addition to the regular lowpass/highpass/bandpass/notch & peak-filters and variations thereof there is an array of filter algorithms (not strictly filters in the traditional sense, but called so because of their location in the audio path) including distortion, parametric/graphic/morphing equalizers,bit-reduction/decimation, gating, limiting, slew-rate distortion, ring-modulation, frequency shifting and phase-modulation (better known as FM). The selection even includes analog-style oscillators that you can mix with the sample.

Over 2021, after the succesful release of Surge 1.9, the Surge Synth team undertook an effort to rebuild Surge in JUCE and add a variety of features. This project resulted in the new version of Surge, called ‘Surge XT’.

OSCILLATORS
3 oscillators per scene, with 12 versatile oscillator algorithms: Classic, Modern, Wavetable, Window, Sine, FM2, FM3, String, Twist, Alias, S&H Noise and Audio Input.

Classic oscillator is a morphable pulse/saw/dual saw oscillator with a sub-oscillator and hard sync.

Modern oscillator is a mixable saw/pulse/triangle oscillator with an optional sub-oscillator mode for triangle (which can also change to sine or square) and hard sync.

FM2/FM3 oscillators consist of a carrier and 2 or 3 modulators and various options.

String oscillator uses two filtered waveguides to emulate plucked or bowed string sounds.

Twist oscillator is based on a very famous Eurorack macro oscillator, and it offers a myriad of synthesis options in a very simple and quick way.

Most algorithms (except FM2, FM3, Twist and Audio Input) offer up to 16-voice unison at the oscillator level.

Oscillator FM in 3 different configurations and ring modulation between oscillators 1-2 and 2-3.

Filters can self-oscillate (with excitation) and respond amazingly fast to cutoff frequency changes.

Fire is a multiband distortion / downsampler plugin.

  • Drive: has several distortion functions. There are two buttons “L” and “S” related to drive knob, and each means “Link” and “Safe”. “Link” means when your turn up drive knob, the output knob value will automatically reduce. “Safe” means if your drive knob pushes your volume too loud, it will automatically reduce your drive value. It also shows reduced value on drive knob.
  • Compressor: you can change threshold and ratio for each band.
  • Width: change audio width.
  • Filter: you can set lowcut, highcut, and peak. Lowcut and highcut each has four slopes (12, 24, 36, 48) you can choose.
  • Downsample: downsample your audio.
  • HQ: 4x oversampling for high quality audio.
  • A/B: switch between A/B to compare.

Don’t waste time looking for kick samples when you can make your own kick easily and quickly. It is made mostly for psytrance kicks but its possible to make kick for any genre even for hardcore.

NoizeClick is a single oscillator synthesizer and it produces Sine Wave.

CLICK ZONE: In the click zone you design the kick you want. The click zone is a set of complex envelopes that modulate pitch sinewave. You can control Start, Decay, Curve and add BOOST. In the Click zone you have three fields. Click1.Click 2 and Click 3. Each of them controls pitch independently of the other therefore each controls a certain frequency of the wave

FILTER: The filter is simple and enough to peak on your kick. It has low pass, high pass, band pass and band reject. In the Filter you can control CUTOFF, Resonance and Gain.

DISTORTION: Distortion is also simple but very powerful. With more distortion you can add a little texture to the kick as well as make a hardcore kick.In the Distortion you can control DRIVE and SHAPE

 

AMP SECTION: At the lower end of the plug-in is an ADSR envelope, which can be used to control the amplitude of the kick.To control the tail for example, we can adjust the sustain and release. Also it can be contoled volume of output.

The New Propanium (aka Milltone) is a multi-sampled tonal metallic drum that has been redesigned from the ground up! In this update, you get a bunch of new features including: New Effects, The ability to Articulation Stack, A Redesigned GUI & A/B effects mixing as well as newly added Pitch Envelop.

The New Propanium is a highly emotive, metal-based, tongue drum. This tonal based metal drum has certain similarities to the Hang Drum, but has less of that steel drum sound. We recorded the Propanium in several different ways using different percussive techniques, including Finger, Brushes, and Mallets. A single articulation like finger contains 10 velocity layers and 8 round robin pr. layers, so we sampled this unique instrument with incredible detail.

The end result is a gorgeous, emotional percussion instrument that oozes of personality. The fact the drum is tonal and perfectly tuned – means you can use it for so many different purposes. Whether it is stand-alone or as a textural supplement to your other instruments.

Emotional Percussion
The New Propanium is one of the most tremendous sounding tonal percussion instruments. True emotive sounding which is really hard to define, it just grasps the ear and makes emotions come alive. We deep-sampled this incredible instrument and added a large section of extra articulations, including Ambiences, Overtone Patches that contains up 35 velocity layers. We also created specific patches that allow you to play the Pronanium with custom arpeggiators and randomization techniques.

Presets & Control
The New Propanium is incredibly easy to use in our new and updated GUI, that allows you to have the instrument right at your fingertips. The library contains 11 instrument patches, 2,000+ samples and over 30 new “right-out-of-the-box” presets, that is ready to give you new inspiration for your composition.

Front-Faced FX and Chaos FX
The New Propanium contains two parallel FX systems. The first one is our new Front-Faced FX, which allows you to control the most fundamental effects from the front panel (ex. Step Based Filtering, Pitch, Delay, and our new Textural Delay) with the ability to stack your articulations. You can also go deeper with our Chaos FX system, which includes, Phase Modulation, EQ, Bit-Crusher, Distortion, Dual Delays and an additional hall based convolution system on top of our custom Textural Convolution Delays

HoRNet Valvola (the Italian word for vacuum tube) it’s an emulation of the electric behavior of a vacuum tube and its surrounding circuit.

The sound of the plugin is as close as you can get to the real tube behavior since the code it’s the direct modeling of the circuit characteristics obtained directly simulating the tube and the biasing circuit around it.
The same technology is found inside our Guitar Kit plugin and Analog Stage plugin and we decided to give it away for free because we are proud of it.

Valvola comes with many different vacuum tube emulations, including triodes and pentodes, from the classic 12AX7 used in pre amplifiers to the EL84 power tube, well using more than one instance of Valvola you could create your little tube amplifier emulation.

The typical tube distortion that Valvola provides is not static but changes with your music since tubes has some kind of “memory effect” that actually change their bias point if they processed high levels (this is the case with heavy bass drums, bass synths or guitars) in practice they distort more with low frequency peaks. Also vacuum tubes are not linear in frequency response and each one has its own characteristic sound that we carefully modeled using the original tube parameters.

All these interactions are controlled using just one “saturation” knob that also keeps the level constant so you can just add distortion without adding gain and keeping the aliasing at minimum thanks to the intelligent oversampling up to 4x.

HoRNet Valvola comes with an hardware accelerated graphic interface that is completely resizable and drawn using vectorial techniques so that it looks sharp and perfect on every monitor size.
